ISD participated in Ministry of Trade and Ministry of Research discussion on the govt’s decision to open education sector to FDI. Foreign universities will be able to establish their campuses in Indonesia – to raise the competition and therefore increasing the quality of higher education. This new policy is based on the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education’s regulation no. 53/2018 that incentives foreign universities to set up/invest on campuses in Indonesia, especially in the designated special economic zones. The govt is especially targetting investment on STEM fields – which we are currently lacking of. However, there are still many challenges such as regulatory issues between government agencies as well as local government polity.
